1929. After completing her educational courses, 18-year-old Nastya Pakhomova returns from the city to her native village of Berezhki. On her very first day back, she runs into Matvey Lykov, whom she has known since childhood. They haven’t seen each other for two years, and Matvey falls in love with Nastya at first sight, while Nastya finds herself developing feelings for him as well. The two begin dating, which sparks fierce opposition from Nastya’s father, the wealthiest peasant in the village. He believes that Matvey, who comes from a poor family, is not good enough for his daughter. The young couple decides to defy their parents, leave the village, and get married. However, their plans are shattered when Matvey’s father dies. Grief-stricken, Matvey blames Nastya’s father for what happened.
