TV-3 has acquired the broadcasting rights for the series “The Count of Monte Cristo”, starring “Hunger Games” actor Sam Claflin. The premiere is set for 2025.
Based on Alexandre Dumas’s iconic novel, the story has been adapted for the screen for over a century, with the first film debuting in 1908. Recently, a movie adaptation starring Pierre Niney was released. However, the upcoming series, directed by Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Bille August, presents the latest retelling. August has previously adapted literary classics, including “Les Misérables” (1998).
The plot follows Edmond Dantès, a sailor whose promising future is derailed by a conspiracy born of jealousy. Wrongly accused of Bonapartism, he is imprisoned without trial in Château d’If. After a decade, he escapes, transforms into the enigmatic Count of Monte Cristo, and embarks on a calculated quest for vengeance against those who wronged him.
Produced by PALOMAR in collaboration with DEMD and distributed by Mediawan Rights, the series will air globally in 2024. TV-3 viewers in Russia will have access to it simultaneously with its international release.
Director Bille August emphasized the depth the series format allows in exploring themes of revenge and redemption, while Sam Claflin expressed excitement at portraying the multi-faceted character of Edmond. Jeremy Irons highlighted the story’s timeless exploration of human nature, betrayal, and justice.
