In 2010, Mourad Merzouki invited the Debussy string quartet to share the stage with his hip-hop dancers. Playing on the contrasts and similarities between dance, boxing and classical music, Boxe Boxe has been performed since, in front of nearly 130,000 spectators. Mourad Merzouki slips back on the gloves to rethink the choreographic writing of this piece as well as the musical score with the Debussy Quartet and presents Boxe Boxe Brasil associating the ten young carioca performers he met almost a decade ago at the Biennale de la Danse Lyon. This project is part of a history of encounters, fidelity and mutual enrichment between a choreographer and 9 young dancers, which began in 2008 when Mourad Merzouki revealed their energy and virtuosity on stage with Agwa. Since then, two creations (Correria Agwa and Käfig Brasil) have been around the world. Today, Mourad Merzouki continues this Franco-Brazilian collaboration by taking over a masterpiece of Käfig’s repertoire in an unprecedented and detonating version in the colors of Brazil.
